A Bohemian Honeymoon in Valparaiso - The Beautiful City of Confusion, Chaos and Contrasts

Valparaiso, Valparaiso.

The name trips off the tongue musically.

And rightly so, as this is one of the most remarkably poetic cities in South America.

It is not surprising that this city is where famed Chilean poet Pablo Neruda built one of his famous homes, La Sebastiana, the décor and architecture reflecting not only the chaotic nooks and crannies of the city, but also the naval influence of the port of Valpo, the most important Pacific port of South America. The surprises of Valparaiso make it the perfect location for the bohemian honeymoon.

When you first arrive in Valparaiso, you might not be so impressed. It looks like any other port city, with the focal point being the water, which is in fact cut off from the city itself by a railway and highway system. In fact, Valpo is actually made up of two cities: one being the "el plan", or the flat plains of vaguely ordered streets, businesses and buildings set off from the water. El Plan is blustering with activity however - from the seafood restaurants along the boardwalk to the plazas or main squares, where one can sit on a bench on a lazy Sunday afternoon and watch the children buzz around on tricycles for 150 pesos.

But take one of the Ascensors, hill side elevators dating back to the late 1800's, up the hills into the second part of the city: the Cerro neighborhoods. Set on the steep slopes of 42 cerros, or hills in Spanish, it is here where you will find the colorful corrugated iron houses sitting together in any way shape or form that they can. In fact, that is what it looks like - as if the buildings have grown organically out of the verdant hills, as if a giant vegetable patch of colorful sweet pepper houses tumbling all over each other. Many people do not get Valparaiso at first. It's not the typical honeymoon vacation choice as there are no beaches to speak of and no real luxury accommodations (though Vina del Mar, a beach and resort vacation hot spot is right next door, 20 minutes away by taxi). The true adventure in Valpo is in touring the chaotic streets of the steep hillsides, admiring the bohemian cafes, jazz bars, wine bars, Tapas bars, artisan craft shops, vintage clothing shops and more. In other words - the paradoxical art which comes not only from the artisans but also rising from the port of Valparaiso into the colorful landscape of chock-a-block town houses, dressed in corrugated iron scraps which were salvaged from the shipping crates of the early port trades.

The most unique thing about these houses is that they are not beautiful - at first. The color is faded on the original houses, and through years of weathering from the sun and salt of the ocean, the sidings of many of these houses are rusted brown and orange. But there is such beauty in the wear, in thinking about what these houses have seen, who has lived in them and what kinds of poetry was inspired by their random flashes of color. And the view from the terraces of these houses and passageways is just incredible. One can see the water, the ships, and the neighboring cerros for miles, colorful as the next. Here one can spend days, weeks, exploring the labyrinthine passageways between the houses, up and down tiny stairwells, careful not to step on the many stray dogs lazing about in the sun. Street vendors peddle their artistic wares, paintings, jewelery, and one hobbyist sells remarkable miniature models (which light up as lamps) of the stunning and puzzling architecture. In Valparaiso, you have stepped back in time to a preserved port city and one of the earliest colonial communities in Chile.

UNESCO declared Valparaiso a World Heritage Site in 2003 as a colonial city that represents an excellent example of 19th century architecture in Latin America. Neruda's fondness for this city moved him to make it one of his adoptive homes. He too could not let go of its romantic landscape of dangling houses, churches, cafes and people:

"The port is a tug-of-war between sea and nature, untamed on the cordilleras. But it was man who won the battle little by little. The hills, and the sea's abundance gave the city a pattern, making it uniform, not like a barracks, but with the variety of spring, its clashing colors, its resonant bustle." (Pablo Neruda, Memoirs, Penguin 1978).

Bucharest City Life at Risk?

It is interesting to see the "countryside" of Bucharest as people here call it. Located just outside the city limits are the "suburbs" as we're used to. When you here Buhcarestians referring to "countryside" people which you surely will, they most likely are coming into the city from these outlying villages. These villiages can be as close as 5km from town, one larger village in particular lies only 8km from the Marriott. So the shock and awe of someone living waaayyyy out in the "countryside" is dismissed as nothing beyond normal for the average American, as suburbia is just another "day in the life". At first glance it appears as though everyone would want to live in the countryside. I mean... who wouldn't want a new construction 100 square meter house with land for less than 100 grand? You get a garage, you get a yard, you're outside of the hustle and bustle of the city? It makes perfect sense right? Everyone should be leaving the city; trading their in-city residence for the "American Dream?"! Well not exactly. First off, a car is a necessity as the bus lines barely run to 25% of the communities. Once you have your car you now have to figure in the third-world infrastructure that demands a minimum hour commute into the city from a measly 10km's away. Don't believe me? Try it out one day during rush hour. Living in partially completed suburbs with pothole ridden dirt roads and incomplete "red" houses isn't the ideal setting you picture in your suburban daydreams either. Since the crisis many out of town developers went belly-up, leaving these partially complete, unattractive communities. Will more lenient bank lending help the suburbs and these dense planned communities fill up?

So here's the interesting part of why the majority of the new houses (basically McMansions) in the "countryside" are being sold... Image. That's it. As sure as people by overpriced houses in Dorobanti, as sure as people properly stack and position their fancy cell phones and key fobs on coffee shop tables, as sure as people with "fancy" cars have the right-of-way, the vast majority of Bucharestians are buying houses in the suburbs as second, or vacation homes. Why wouldn't one buy a vacation home in a "vacation" area like anywhere between here and the mountains? Simply because your vacation house MUST be close enough for you to whisk your unsuspecting friends and family members away to for a quick barbecue! But isn't this typical anyways?

That leaves the rest of the older houses in the more established communities. These are people that choose to be "away" from it all, or that have lived there through multiple generations. Quite often these people own quite a bit of land, and still have beautiful gardens in which they grow a lot of their own food. It truly is a different lifestyle and does have a hint of desirability.

For someone looking to get a taste of the suburb life while still being close "enough" to Bucharest, try looking for re-sale homes outside of the pre-planned communities. Maybe even consider a nice restoration project with a large parcel of land, as you'll more than likely "beat the banks" on appreciation.

So will people from the "big city" spread out to image-conscious McMansions? Will they buy in to the master-planned communities? Will they say to hell with the city and buy an older farmhouse? Who knows! Only time and progress will tell!

Landscape Design Ideas For Gardens, Roof Gardens and Terraces For City and Country Homes

All too often the garden becomes almost an after thought and the last priority in a restricted home improvement budget. For me this is a travesty, as the garden is probably the largest room of the house and deserves the same thought and design afforded to the kitchen, living room or bathrooms. It is very often the feature which can make the difference between selling a home or not.

Even small London or city gardens, where space is a premium, can be transformed into a haven of architectural foliage and fabulous areas for summer dining and entertaining, adding not only value to the home, but a new dimension to living space. Remember, the garden should not be considered as a separate entity, but more as an extension of the living room. In our short summers it should be a magnet drawing family and friends to it at every available opportunity, and in winter the view should be one which serves to remind that spring is not too far away.

The design and planning of a garden is the starting point. The chosen style and design should reflect the home and not be at odds with it. One needs to begin by addressing any unsightly features. Even an ugly view can be softened with careful thought to planting. Equally, privacy should be protected without the prying eyes of neighbours overlooking. Once again this can usually be achieved with strategic planting. Common garden fences can be camouflaged, as can sheds, which may serve as essential storage, but lend absolutely nothing to the overall design.

The next priority is the patio, the size of which should at the very least, accommodate the occupants of the household, and if space allows, provide for entertaining. Tables and chairs should fit comfortably with plenty of room to walk around, and the golden rule of never blocking the entrance from the house into the garden always adhered to. Ideally, patio depths should be a minimum of 4 metres. Quite simply, skimpy patios look awful.

The hard landscaping of the garden and the choice of materials is paramount and whilst budget may ultimately dictate the finishes, always try to aim for the best you can afford. For example, cheap pine decking looks like a budget finish from the day it is installed, let alone after a year or two, when it will become a slippery algae covered liability unless regularly maintained. A good quality hardwood deck, on the other hand, will look beautiful for many years to come with very little maintenance and in the grand scheme of things, the extra cost is money well spent. In a contemporary or minimalist garden where the emphasis really focuses on the hard landscaping, the quality of the materials becomes even more relevant.

For those who live in an apartment or are denied a garden, remember that flat roofs or terraces can equally be transformed into very inviting and useful outdoor spaces, although a roof garden maybe subject to planning. Many plants and even trees are quite happy to spend their lives in containers providing they are kept watered and the nutrients in the soil replaced. With the benefit of computerised irrigation and slow release fertilisers this is very easy.

Now we come to the design itself. For those seeking something a little different from their garden, many would be surprised to learn that even in our less than perfect English climate, it is possible to create a tropical looking garden utilising a host of exotic plants from around the world which will not only survive, but literally flourish even enduring snow, ice and the harshest of winters.

Just imagine a sub-tropical paradise of palm trees, bamboo, big leaf architectural plants such as banana and all here in the UK. This works particularly well in small London and inner city gardens creating an instant impact with dense tropical foliage, creating a real urban jungle. Even though one can be more adventurous in the city where the micro climate allows for more tender plants, it is possible to create an exotic garden in all but the coldest parts of the UK.

Tropical gardens play with different textures of foliage and colour is used in splashes of hot vibrant reds, oranges and yellows provided by exotic flowers such as cannas and gingers. Natural materials such as hardwood decking and terracotta work particularly well with this design theme as do ponds and water features. Creating an exotic garden full of drama is an exciting and different approach to your garden design, and with evergreen trees and shrubs interest is created throughout the seasons.

For larger gardens one can also create a more structured and manicured look imitating some of the great gardens of the Mediterranean.
